absolute value

The absolute value of a number is its distance from zero.

Formally,
for a real number aR, the absolute value of a is

|a|={aa>00a=0aa<0

Some properties of the absolute value include

  1. |ab|=|a||b|
  2. |a|2=a2
  3. if c0, then |a|ccac
  4. |a|a|a|
  5. |a+b||a|+|b| (triangle inequality)
