discrete and continuous variables

Distinguishing between quantitative variables:

• a discrete variable takes a single value with a "gap" on either side
• a continuous variable takes any value in an interval of values

Formally,

• a discrete variable takes values which have a bijection to a subset of the natural numbers
• a continuous variable takes values which have a bijection to a subinterval of the real numbers
