inclusion-exclusion principle

The inclusion-exclusion principle states that the cardinality of the union of two sets is the sum of their individual cardinalities minus the cardinality of their intersection.

Formally,

| A \cup B | = | A | + | B | - | A \cap B |

This can be thought of as "correcting the double-counted elements".
