sigma algebra

A σ-algebra is a set of subsets of a space such that it is are closed under set union and set complement.

Formally,
let X be a space, and P(X) be its power set. A subset ΣP(X) is called a σ-algebra if

  1. XΣ
  2. (A1A2)Σ for all AiΣ
  3. (XA)Σ for all AΣ

By De Morgan's laws, (A1A2)Σ for all AiΣ

By (1) and (3), Σ.

An element of a σ-algebra is called a measurable set.
An ordered pair (X,Σ) is called a measurable space.
A tuple (X,Σ,μ) of a measurable space with measure μ is a measure space.
