partition of an interval

A partition of an interval is a finite and strictly increasing sequence of elements in the interval.

Formally,
an interval I=[a,b] has a partition

P=(x0,x1,x2,,xn)

where

a=x0<x1<x2<<xn=b

and each [xi,xi+1] is a subinterval of I.

The norm of a partition is the length of its longest subinterval.
