An equation is a symbolic equality of two expressions.

Formally,
when expressions $P,Q$ are equal, we write $P=Q$.

Algebra studies equation solving: for some unknown variable in the equation, a solution is a value of the variable for which the equality holds.

An equation which holds for all values in its domain of discourse is an identity.
