mutually exclusive events

Two events are mutually exclusive if they cannot occur simultaneously.

Formally,
events $A,B$ are mutually exclusive if they are disjoint sets, i.e. $A\cap B=\varnothing$

Mutually exclusive events with nonzero probability are dependent, since knowing that one does occur says the opposite about the other.
